Turkish Citizenship Through Marriage: Eligibility, Timeline & Requirements

Marrying a Turkish citizen does not grant citizenship automatically, and it is often misunderstood as a fast track. The real process runs on its own timeline, with conditions designed to confirm the marriage is genuine before citizenship is granted.

The Three-Year Rule

A foreign spouse becomes eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship after being married to, and living together with, a Turkish citizen for at least three uninterrupted years. The three-year period must be continuous, so a lengthy separation, even without divorce, can reset the clock.

What the Application Requires

Beyond the marriage certificate, applicants must show the marriage is not solely for citizenship purposes, have no record that threatens national security or public order, and hold a valid residence permit for the duration of the marriage. Authorities may conduct a home visit or interview both spouses separately to confirm the marriage is genuine.

What Happens If the Marriage Ends

If the marriage ends in divorce or the Turkish spouse passes away before the three-year mark, the foreign spouse generally loses eligibility under this route, though citizenship already granted is not revoked simply because the marriage later ends, provided it was genuine at the time.

How Long the Process Takes

Once the three-year threshold is met and the file is submitted, review and background checks typically take a year or more, since each application is examined individually rather than processed on a fixed schedule. Keeping consistent address registration, tax records, and residence permit renewals throughout the marriage makes this review considerably smoother.

Getting It Right From the Start

Because marriage-based citizenship is assessed on the full history of the relationship, not just the paperwork at the time of filing, it pays to plan the residence permit and documentation trail correctly from day one. Bosphorus Legal Counsel advises international couples through the residence permit, the three-year period, and the eventual citizenship application.
